Adjustment (Spinal Manipulation)

Spinal Decompression

A chiropractic adjustment—also called spinal manipulation—is a gentle, controlled movement applied to a joint, most often in the spine. The goal is to improve mobility in the affected joint, reduce muscle tension, and support overall function.

Joint restrictions can occur for many reasons, including everyday activities, repetitive movement, or injuries such as slips, falls, or auto accidents. When a joint isn’t moving well, it may contribute to discomfort, stiffness, or changes in how the surrounding muscles and tissues function.

During an adjustment, your chiropractor uses either their hands or a specialized instrument to apply a precise, quick, and safe movement to the joint. You may hear a “popping” sound—known as joint cavitation—which is simply the release of gas (such as oxygen or nitrogen) from the joint space, similar to when you crack your knuckles.

Research shows that spinal manipulation can be effective for certain types of musculoskeletal pain, including back and neck pain, and is considered safe when performed by a trained professional. Many patients also report improved ease of movement and a general sense of well-being after an adjustment.
