What It Is & How It Works
Shockwave therapy—also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT)—is a
non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate the
body’s natural healing processes. The waves are delivered through a handheld
device placed on the skin over the area of concern.
Why People Choose It
Shockwave therapy is often used to help manage chronic tendon and soft tissue conditions, such as:
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tennis elbow
- Shoulder tendon problems
- Certain types of muscle pain or overuse injuries
Many people choose this therapy when other conservative approaches (like rest,
stretching, or physical therapy) haven’t provided enough relief.
What to Expect During Treatment
Your chiropractor will apply a gel to the treatment area, then move the
shockwave device over the skin. The session usually lasts 5–10 minutes. You
may feel tapping or pulsing sensations—some areas can be tender, but most
people tolerate the treatment well.
Effectiveness & Safety
Research supports the use of shockwave therapy for certain tendon and ligament
problems, especially when combined with a broader treatment plan. It is
considered safe when performed by trained professionals. Temporary redness,
mild swelling, or soreness in the treated area can occur and typically resolve
within a few days.
